International Excerpts: Accretions A Translation |
Margaret Skalbania is Polish, she lives in Lublin, and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. She paints, draws and writes. Her book of poetry has been recognized as one of the twenty best printed in Poland in 2013. Publications of her poems have appeared in several literary magazines and almanacs. In November she will be published in Indiana Voice and in January she will appear in Ink Dot.
Below, you will find excerpts of Skalbania's poetry in her native Polish as well as in English translation. As is common with translation, something can be lost in the transition from one language to another. Everything from vocabulary to subject-verb agreement can change between languages and so below is Skalbania's original translation as she saw it fit. While in English, some of the diction and syntax won't be as clear as in Polish, but it is important to read between the lines. With translations, we ask that you read the emotions in the words and line breaks. The beauty of poetry is that it is like perfume in a closed room: emotions can still seep through the planks where words fail.
Also included at the bottom are pieces of art included in the book of poetry. Enjoy.
