Collins was the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003 and was the Distinguished Professor at Lehman College as part of City University of New York. He was also the New York State Poet Laureate from 2004 to 2006 and has earned such accolades as a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, and Poetry Magazine’s Poet of the Year in 1994.

Howl: What is the importance of the literary arts in high school?
Collins: I have said that high school is the place where poetry goes to die, but with the right teacher and the right poems, it can be the place where the childhood joys of poetry are renewed and set in place for life. |
