Richard Wilbur is an American poet whose accolades include being appointed the second U.S. Poet Laureate in 1987 and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice.

(in response to an inquiry about why poetry is Mr. Wilbur’s creative medium of choice and the effect of his poem, “The Writer,” on his daughter.)
Dear Mr. Emerick-Brown, I had a grandfather who was a newspaper man, and a father who was a painter, and so it’s not surprising that I became a poet - an artist in words. My daughter Ellen, for whom I wrote “The Writer,” has become a fine writer of short stories. Please give my good wishes to your students, and the same to you.
